Blueprint of a conscious machine

An event that will change everything

In June 2010, Scientific American published an article that identified twelve events in technology that would "change everything".

The aim of the MECA SAPIENS project is to achieve one of these twelve major technological events: machine self-awareness.

The objective of MECA SAPIENS is to define machine consciousness and develop the blueprint to achieve it.

To achieve this, the project follows a classical engineering development process.

This development strategy represents a significant departure from other current research in Machine Consciousness (learn more...).

Consciousness specified

The first step of a classical engineering development process is Requirements and Specifications.  Its purpose is to clarify the requirements motivating the work and define the objective (consciousness) in terms of unambiguous and achievable specifications.

This step has been completed. Machine consciousness has been defined as an observable capability that is described  in terms of achievable specifications. The MECA SAPIENS requirements and specifications for machine consciousness are published in The Creation of a Conscious Machine.

Blueprint in progress

The second step of the process is System Design. Its objective is to produce the System Architecture, the realistic  outline of a complete solution to can achieve the specifications.

Work on the System Architecture (called the Blueprint) is in progress. When the Blueprint is sufficiently advanced, other researchers will be invited to participate in its continued development.

Once the Blueprint is completed, machine consciousness will have been specified and the high level components of a complete solution outlined. Design and Implementation can then begin. It will be possible to build a conscious machine (learn more...).

MECA SAPIENS is a Monterège project.
