Computer age investigations

Realistic attempts at building intelligent and conscious machines really begin with the computer age. The artifacts produced, before that time, provide us with useful insights, but they had no chance of success.

In this section, we now examine the early achievements in the field of Artificial Intelligence. In particular, we examine the evolving definition of machine intelligence and of the criteria that were thought to be sufficient to achieve it. Again, the objective is to gain insights as we build the material necessary to produce a specification that clearly describes the behavior required for a machine to be conscious.

As the investigation progresses our understanding of the required machine behavior will become increasingly precise.

We define the three core conditions of consciousness and propose a precise and general definition of intelligence that can be applied to machines. This is an original and important new contribution to the philosophy of mind.

The Master Automaton

The increasingly complex machines produced by the industrial age gave rise to a new definition of machine intelligence. This theory stated that, for a machine to become intelligent, it would be sufficient that it performed a task that only an intelligent person could do. This theory arose as soon as the existence of complex machines became possible and remained in effect into the computer age. I refer to this theory as: the Master Automaton theory of intelligence.

ELIZA

The ELIZA program provides very interesting insights in the links between intellligence and consciousness. We discover that some of the power of ELIZA results from the social aspects of consciousness and are linked to an ancient technique already discussed.

Intelligence as substance

The failure of Master Automatons to be intuitively perceived as intelligent led to a redefinition of intelligence as a "substance" whose presence is indicated by adaptive problem solving. However, this definition does not satisfy our intuitive understanding of what we mean by machine intelligence. The conjecture is stated that this intuitive model of intelligence is linked to consciousness.

The Core Conditions of Consciousness

The ELIZA program is not an interesting computer implementation of the divination process. It provides us with insights that allow us to define the Core Conditions of Consciousness. This is an important and original result. It sets clear and observable conditions for machine consciousness. These conditions form the basis for a first definition Machine Intelligence that is general yet precise enough for machine implementation.
