Having clarified the context of the quest and the objective conditions to be met, this section begins to develop the design of the solution. Consciousness will not result from the output of a single algorithm. It will emerge from the interaction of an adaptive model of the machine in its environment and a collection of behaviorsal layers. This section describes these layers. The design begins with a software application interacting dynamically with users through a standard man machine interface (MMI). This constitutes the canvas or foundation. The MMI is then channeled to a gateway of interacting behavioral layers that modify its output. These layers affect the system's behavior in various ways. They enact communication strategies, emotions, personas and the autonomy of a being. As these layers are developed, the reader will begin to perceive the emergence of a competing order of being. He will experience a sense of foreboding. However, having addressed those fears in the first section, we will not be deterred by the fear that our precious attributes may turn out to be as much flash as substance. We will thus continue. |
