1. An Ancient Quest

The desire to create a conscious artifact dates back to the dawn of time and lies at the heart of mankind’s quest for knowledge.

This section explores how this endeavor is related to the human quest for knowledge. It describes how the objective of building a conscious machine is linked to many fundamental fields of knowledge such as mathematics, religion, psychology and physics.

We discover that the quest is hobbled by a secret obstacle: fear of success. This has hampered all the preceding attempts to build an intelligent machine. Humans, especially intelligent ones, need to believe that their intellect has quasi-magical properties that lie beyond comprehension and replication. This quest to build a functioning mechanical intelligence will cause, if it is successful, to a sobering and fearsome reassessment of the human intellect. Even researchers in the field of AI fear this result.

To have any chance of success in this endeavor, a development team must face and overcome the secret fear of succeeding that lurks beneath the surface of any attempt to build a conscious intellect.

The section concludes by stating the MECA SAPIENS conjecture. This conjecture defines a new field of knowledge, tentatively called Cogistics, centered solely on achieving machine consciousness.
