Artificial Intelligence has been diverted from the elemental goal of building an intelligent machine. A new field, within AI should be defined that is solely focused on this objective. A good name for this field would be: Cogistics.

The primary impediments to building an intelligent machine are not technical. It is not complexity, lack of resources, or insufficiencies in the underlying technologies. No, the single greatest obstacle that can prevent us from building truly intelligent machines is fear. To succeed, the goal of Cogistics must be pursued without any restraint.

The "pudding" proof

The quest to build a conscious machine straddles both Mathematics and Engineering. The Cogistics conjecture can be viewed either as a project of engineering and as a theorem of Mathematics. Similarly, the resolution of the conjecture will be both a new type of Mathematical proof and a feat of engineering.

A Fundamental Conjecture

It is not enough, of course, to proceed without fear. We must also know what we want to do. Many fields of technology, especially in their early stage, are centered on a conjecture that captures the essence of the field and expresses it as a clearly defined goal. These conjectures transform research into a contest. They are powerful motivating forces. The quest to build an intelligent machine should be expressed as a fundamental conjecture.
