Our thoughts are the most intimate activities we produce. We feel we are in full control of our mental processes and that we completely understand them. Deciphering the human process of thinking appears to be deceptively simple. However, trying to understand a thought is like trying to catch a shadow.

Under a veneer of scientific neutrality, the attempt to create an intelligent machine is a fearsome endeavour. Unspoken fears have hobbled AI, the fear that machines will rule the world and the fear that machines will reveal the mechanistic nature of the human mind. These fears must be faced to be overcome.
