The field of Artificial Intelligence became popular in the earliest days of Computer Science. In spite of all efforts, the initial objective of building an intelligent machine failed completely. AI crashed in a wall of unexpected difficulty. It splattered. The original goal was discarded.

Deciphering the human process of thinking appears to be deceptively simple. However, trying to understand a thought is like trying to catch a shadow.

Unspoken fears have hobbled AI, the fear that machines will rule the world and the fear that machines will reveal the mechanistic nature of the human mind. These fears must be faced to be overcome.

Slowed by Small Gains

When Artificial Intelligence hit the wall of mirrors it splattered in non essential directions. It also became consumed by the production and sharing of small results. This activity reflects the working conditions of academia. However, it detracts from reaching the fundamental goal of AI since that goal can only be achieved through a development effort that aims beyond the production of limited results.
