The objective of the MECA SAPIENS project is to develop the blueprint of a conscious machine. This is an on going project. This site publishes the blueprint as it evolves.

This is the status of the MECA SAPIENS project as of February 15, 2010:

The draft of the first section, An Ancient Quest, was completed in June 2009.

The second section, Defining the conditions, began in June 2009. The subsections, Primitive attempts, early computer investigations and the Turing Test have been completed. A general definition of intelligence that is suitable for machine implementation has now been provided as well as a first programmable definition of machine consciousness. This is, I believe, a world first.

Defining the conditions, is accessible to registered members (registration is still FREE!). I hope to complete this section by end February 2010, ending with a clear and complete specification for producing a conscious machine.

I hope to start drafting the third section (Behavioral Layers) in March 2010. The objective of this section is a system that is perceived as conscious. I hope to complete it by the fall. This section will begin to address the design of a conscious machine by defining the existential characteristics of a conscious entity.

I aim at completing section four, a formal and programmable design for a consciousness model by the end of the year. This last section will strive to implement actual consciousness in the entity that is perceived as conscious.

At that point, the main part of the blueprint will have been completed providing a proof, I believe that it is feasible to build a conscious machine. I plan to work on the core techniques (section 5) providing mathematical structures for open ended learning over 2011.
