There are as many definitions of machine consciousness. Most of current research in this area defines consciousness as an inner state and aims to construct synthetic brains that can replicate the experience of being conscious. This is a stupendously difficult endeavor that has yet to be clearly defined and whose theoretical feasibility is in doubt.
Meca Sapiens follows a different approach. In Meca Sapiens, consciousness is not an inner experience. It is an observable characteristic of a system that can be perceived in its behavior and is independent of the mechanisms that animate it.
By following this approach, implementing a conscious machine becomes a feasible and realistic objective.
The objective of the MECA SAPIENS project is to build a conscious machine.
To achieve this, the project follows a three step development process:
- Provide a clear definition of consciousness stated in terms of machine-achievable Specifications.
- Produce a System Architecture (or Blueprint) to achieve the specifications.
- Once the Blueprint is completed, launch an open-source collaboration effort to implement its components .
The first step of the project, a machine-achievable Specification that defines consciousness is completed. The result is published as: The Creation of a Conscious Machine.
The development of the Blueprint is in progress. Support is being sought to complete it.
Once the first version of the Blueprint is completed, it will serve as the framework for an open source collaboration.
As a result, the powerful thechnology that generates machine consciousness will belong to everyone and be accessible to all.
Meca Sapiens is a Monterège project. The System Architect is J. E. Tardy.
